Black Onyx I
Rin and I finished the translation. He'll set everything when he returns.

So plot points:

- Walter WANTS to kill Alucard by himself and doesn't want Major's scheme. Not by luck! He screams, trying to cleave Alucard on half too.

- Major lols and explains Walter he has NO chance to win. At all. That everyone who died were sacrifices to kill ONE foe, Alucard, and this is one chance in a lifetime to defeat him. There were two chances after 1898 (Anderson's and Major's?). He mocks Walter telling he surely has guessed by now that the lives of about a million and two millions and within him now and a nobody like he has turned to be as no chance against this.

- Doc has a cameo earlier, nothing important, he's Major's chorus. Integral's present as witness of the exchange. No lines.

- Alucard mocks Walter saying if Anderson couldn't beat him a "piece of shit brat" like him has no chance in 50 or 500 years.

- Then there's AGAIN that voice: You lose, Alucard. From the blood? Apparently, it wasn't Walter's voice in the past since he's like "NOOOES I WANNA BEAT HIM, MAJOR, PLLLLLZ!" in this one.

- Major's "Victory" singsong at the end is the BEST of the chapter. Sad to say.

This chapter basically can be dubbed "Bash Walter" instead of Black Onyx because nothing else happens besides everyone telling how much Walter sucks. Twelve pages of that. Pretty weak to stretch the plot like this. ._.

Hirano must hate him. I mean, Alucard and Major spent 12 pages telling his worthlessness.

That was so random.

I don't even LIKE Walter. But Hirano puts no effort to make him a serious character with the potential he has to be good...

This chapter just sealed my distaste for canon!Walter.

I'm kind of glad I already stopped reading. I was going to catch up after it was finished, and I still probably will, but this is ... meh. I wasn't fond of the Dark Walter development in the first place but it was Hirano's deal and I could see why people thought it was cool because at least Walter was still badass. This is just kind of stupid, unless there's some twist, because it's just more "Why Alucard is totally better than everybody except maybe Integra."

"Why Alucard is totally better than everybody except maybe Integra."

Because no one is better than Integra. Duh.

The manga has give and take moments. The SerasPip battle with Captain is AMAZING. They like, used strategy, instead of godmodding. The little Iscariot moments are too. Integra and Seras through the Zeppelin. Integra vs Major. They are GOOD moments.

SCHRÖDINGER'S SPOILER = was fantastic.

But the Nail and Walter thing just meh. I did like Alucard's emotional response to Alex but his utter distate to Walter baffles me, but at the same time makes me wonder if we'll be showed their mutual past hatred in the Dawn... Their relationship couldn't be THAT good.

Well, I liked that too, because it showed he was more than a monster, which could have been done badly too but I thought it was pulled off well.

That's sort of what I always thought -- mostly after Dark Walter of course but even before sometimes. But now I'm too out of it to really speculate. I imagine they will show something though, I doubt Hirano has the Dawn and the current developments going but won't even try to tie any of it together.

Hated how Anderson was handled there. But Alucard? Alucard was fantastic. Seras and Integra were pretty much wallflowers until the plot needed them but I ALSO liked their little appearance. Oh well.

But now I'm too out of it to really speculate. I imagine they will show something though, I doubt Hirano has the Dawn and the current developments going but won't even try to tie any of it together.

Dawn, now you mention, displayed their relationship in a NEGATIVE light. Cover aside. Walter kicked Alucard's coffin. Alucard insulted Walter and left him at the mercy of a werewolf without looking back...

I would almost feel bad for Walter.

But.

He's basically been characterized as irredeemably unlikable since becoming a vampire. Except for that whole, "Rigged your Jackal, foo'!" thing, because Alucard's face was pretty much awesome there. But anyway, Unless Hirano pulls out some backstory/other explanation next chapter stating Walter had been brainwashed, and not a willing traitor, Walter will go down as one of the more supremely unsympathetic characters in the series, IMO.

To summarize: Weak to stretch the plot, but I LMAO.

Yeah, this is why I just don't care anymore. I loved Walter and now it's like "No, actually he's just a big huge jerk!" I mean, yeah, it's Hirano's manga and his plot so he can do what he wants but I just don't want to bother anymore except maybe to write AU fanfic.

Actually, I wouldn't MIND Walter be evil traitor who kicks puppies and eats babies... just I want him consistently written... not so randomly mangled character.

Well, I was going to mention anime Walter but I didn't want anyone (I don't mean you) to make fun of me for it... XD I still do write him and I doubt I'll ever stop. And Walter's character in the anime wasn't exactly the opposite of the way his character was understood in the early manga...

I can't exactly say I'm on board with Walter the evil traitor but Walter the evil pathetic traitor is way worse.

I like the Anime. So. :) If anyone makes fun of you, I'll kick their ass. I like the Manga better, but still. My friend [info]herit is too an Anime fan. She could also see the reasoning for Walter/Seras, Anime wise. ;)

See... I wouldn't mind if Walter was vicious because I love vicious two faced characters *this journal is for Dietrich who is LIKE that* But... Walter yeah... so badly written.

Hee, I like you! XD I loved the manga when I started reading it, and of course it's why the anime with all its flaws exists anyway! I just got burned out on it later.

And it helps that Walter/Seras makes sense (for a given value of sense) in the anime, so I can write it there. I don't really mind if people don't like it though as long as they just leave me alone (which they actually pretty much do...)

Manga... depends for what character. For Alucard? Volume 8-beginning of 9 is my favorite. I really love Manga Seras's happy ending. She had too much bad luck in the Anime, but in the Manga she scored Pip who is a golden mine. Integra's rabu and the Iscariots. <3

She can see the reasoning, not completely a shipper (she's more for Alucard/Integra), and likes Walter anime wise and as a bad guy in the manga. :)

Highly unlikely at this rate. This entire chapter smelled as authorial intent to label Walter in a negative light. By the "hero" and the villain no less!

The Jackal thing was pretty much awesome. I agree thar.

You are a Yumie fangirl. YOUR OPINION DOESN'T COUNT. XD

But I'm also meh at the bad art. After chapter 87 and the awesome YKO cover, chapter 88, dialogue AND art, was so subpar.

Hmmm..I dunno what to say. They're being so hard on Walter it's almost kinda funny. But when I look back at the series before Walter turned traitor...it's just sad. He was a lovable, noble character. Walter being a traitor never bothered me as much as it bothers some people...but this chapter made me realize how much I actually miss the old Walter. :(

I think the Walter bashing thing is to infuriate him or something. Then he'll do something drastic in the next chapter, etc..

Seriously think that Hirano really has no idea to end it, though. That's what's usually turned out when people face blocks.

Reading the translated scan, though, I think Hirano's trying to actually make something out of all this. Like the "monster<human" thing. And does Walter look like he just fainted (or lost hope) or is it just me?

I share your distate for the canonical Walter. He was a wonderful character in the first 6 volumes, and now he's just fodder. The reasons for his treason haven't been congently explained at all; it seems to me to be a plot device that Hirano came up with. He tends to make people act OOC when he wants a big effect or a plot twist, and this is perhaps the worst such example of that fault.

I've said it before: Hirano can create great characters, but after he creates them he often doesn't know what to DO with them. So he gets bored, turns his people into cardboard cutouts for his endless battle scenes, and knocks them off.

I see only one way out. Having been spurned by the Major like this, perhaps Walter will see the light a little and regret his treason. I don't think it will save him, but perhaps he'll die well, forgiving (and being forgiven by) Alucard and Integra. But if Heinkel kills Walter (she's GOT to now, what else is she still THERE for?) and Alcuard kills HER, I will be severely PO'd.

They were in v9? He wanted to fight Alucard. Deep, woah.

Isn't it er... lame? He regrets it because he didn't get his way. HOHSHI, trusting Major was a bad ideaaaaaa. Dur. I doubt Integral will forgive HIM in these terms. Maybe feel sad, but he still betrayed her for the enemy who destroyed her country and what for? Fighting Alucard.

But if Heinkel kills Walter (she's GOT to now, what else is she still THERE for?) and Alcuard kills HER, I will be severely PO'd.

I doubt Alucard gives a damn for Walter. While Integral MIGHT, just because she raised the sword and ordering him to die there (which is a sign of farewell-respect), as does Seras (who is as half of the Manga confused with everything). Alucard's not hateful, he considers Walter completely worthless here. Not worth his time, not worth effort, and even laughs at the idea of him being an enemy.

Well, the whole Walter plotline has become terribly lame at this point, so any resolution of it will be equally paralytic.

Yeah, Alucard doesn't care about Walter...Int and Seras might. But I still have a queasy feeling about Heinkel. I just sense that someone's going to kill her, she has an air of tragedy. (Sorry, Raykat.)

Trusting the Major? trusting Millenium? Heck, they're NAZIS. You really have to be severely retarded to trust Nazis 55 years after WWII, and as Mitts pointed out long ago this is a huge logical flaw in the whole Hellsing plot.

Silly Mitts, logic doesn't apply to Hellsing. Integral would have HAD competent information to avoid this invasion if her fellow countrymen applied Earth Logic.
